The fifth day of learning at the Riga Academy in Riga, Latvia, was active and substantial. On this day, we explored how Article 27 – Work and Employment of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities operates in Latvia. We had the pleasure of welcoming Imants Lipskis, the Director of the Labor Market Policy Department at the Ministry of Welfare, who shared insights on:
- Regulations governing this sphere.
- State measures encouraging employers to hire people with disabilities.
- Benefits for both parties involved.
- Actions taken to expand employment opportunities and promote advancement within the workplace.
Colleagues from the NGO Sustento shared their experience in placing people with disabilities in employment and how various support programs developed by State Employment Agencies practically function.
An informative session took place at the main office of the trading company RIMI, where we saw and heard about their experience in employing people with disabilities. This retail network has actively implemented an inclusive policy for several years.
The day concluded with a pleasant bonus – a trip to Jurmala. We had the opportunity to converse, exchange thoughts in a relaxed atmosphere, and enjoy the beauty of the sea and the city.
